Karlovo lies in the northern part of the Karlovo valley, at the southern foot of the Balkan Mountains, at 392–612 m above sea level. The mountains block the cold northern air masses, and snow cover is unstable and rarely more than 10–15 cm.
The average temperature is about 0 °C in January and 22–24 °C in July. The town lies in the fertile valley of the Stryama river, known as the Rose Valley, and gardens here grow well as long as they get water during the dry summer weeks.
