Local conditions
Gardens in Sofia — what to look out for
Sofia lies in the Sofia Plain, at 550–650 m above sea level, and its southern districts reach the lower slopes of Vitosha. Winters are cold and snowy: on average there is snow cover on about 58 days a year, and on the coldest days it drops to –15 °C or lower. That is why irrigation systems here are drained and winterised before the first frosts; otherwise the water in the pipes and valves freezes and damages them.
About 582 mm of rain a year falls mostly in late spring and early summer, and on the hottest days of July and August temperatures go above 35 °C. That is exactly when the lawn scorches fastest. The automatic system waters early in the morning, when the water doesn’t evaporate, and gives each zone just as much as it needs.
In Boyana, Dragalevtsi, Simeonovo and Knyazhevo, yards are often on a slope — there we split the system into zones and install drip irrigation along the slope so the water doesn't run off. In Mladost, Lyulin and Druzhba we maintain the green areas between apartment blocks and the yards of new buildings.

When should I winterise my irrigation system in Sofia?
Before the first hard frosts, depending on the weather, usually in autumn. We drain the water from the pipes, valves and pump so it doesn’t freeze. In spring we come back to recommission the system: inspection of all zones and adjustment, €15 per zone for systems with up to 4 zones.
Do you work on sloping gardens at the foot of Vitosha?
