Ruse sits on the high, dry right bank of the Danube, on river terraces, at about 45 m above sea level. Temperature extremes are large: 44.7 °C has been recorded here in summer and –27.7 °C in winter.
About 600 mm of rain a year is not enough for the lawn in the hot summer weeks. The automatic system takes over the watering, while drip irrigation saves water around shrubs and trees.
Winters are cold and windy, so the irrigation system is drained before the frosts, and we plant sensitive plants in more sheltered spots. In spring we come to de-winterise the system and apply spring fertiliser.
