Gardens in Pernik — what to look out for
Pernik lies in the Pernik Valley, at 700–850 m above sea level, between Vitosha, Golo Bardo and Lyulin. Spring comes late, around the end of March and the start of April, and in winter temperature inversions and fog are common. So we plant once the last frosts have passed and choose plants that can handle the cold of the valley.
The soils are mainly cinnamonic soils and leached smolnitsa (vertisols), with fertile chernozem in the flat part of the valley. Smolnitsa soils are heavy and hold water, so the irrigation system is set up by zone and according to the soil, not with the same run time everywhere.
Rainfall is 550–606 mm a year, and summer droughts are milder than in the lowlands. Even so, in July and August the lawn needs regular watering — the automatic system takes care of it and saves water by watering early in the morning.
