Spring arrives here for good at the start of March, and autumn stays warm until the end of November — the system runs for a long season. With about 720 mm of rain a year, air humidity is lowest in summer, especially in August, and that’s when drip irrigation saves the most water.
Mains water in Kyustendil costs about €2.04 per m³ including VAT, sewerage and treatment (Kyustendilska Voda, at prices approved by the Energy and Water Regulatory Commission (KEVR), effective 1 March 2026). According to the 2022–2027 River Basin Management Plan, the town sits above the shallow groundwater body “Quaternary – Neogene – Kyustendil”, which is in good chemical status. The Banshtitsa and Kolushka rivers carry little water, so a well is the real alternative to mains water.
Kyustendil is among the hottest places in the country — 43.2 °C was recorded here on 24 July 2007. On days like these the system waters early in the morning, before the water evaporates, and each zone gets as much as it needs.

Up to 10 m³ a day for watering your own property in a built-up area is free and needs no permit. You notify the West Aegean Region Basin Directorate before the well is built and register it within 3 months afterwards — free of charge.
Rainwater tank
It collects water from the roof and feeds it to the system with a pump. It lowers your water bill and helps where the well gives little water.
Pressure and flow rate
They determine how many sprinklers can run at the same time. Based on them, we divide the system into zones and choose the pump — we check both during the on-site visit.
