About 498 mm of rain falls on the coast each year — below the national average. Without watering, the lawn won’t make it through the summer, and autumn is warm and long, so the system runs until late in the year.
Mains water in Varna costs about €3.03 per m³ including VAT, sewerage and treatment (ViK Varna, at prices approved by the Energy and Water Regulatory Commission (KEVR), effective 1 March 2026). This is the most expensive water of the 16 cities we work in. According to the 2022–2027 River Basin Management Plan, the city sits above the shallow groundwater body “Izgrev – Varna – Botevo – Batovo”, whose chemical status is rated poor because of sulphates, manganese and iron. Iron and manganese clog drip emitters, so well water used for drip irrigation goes through a filter.
The steep slopes of the plateaus are prone to landslides — at Cape Galata, for example. There we don’t overwater: the water is metered zone by zone and delivered by drip, so the slope doesn’t get waterlogged.

A well in your yard
Up to 10 m³ a day for watering your own property in a built-up area is free and needs no permit. You notify the Black Sea Region Basin Directorate before the well is built and register it within 3 months afterwards — free of charge.
Rainwater tank
It collects water from the roof and feeds it to the system with a pump. It lowers your water bill and helps where the well gives little water.
Pressure and flow rate
They determine how many sprinklers can run at the same time. Based on them, we divide the system into zones and choose the pump — we check both during the on-site visit.

The well doesn’t need a building permit, but it must be at least 3 m from the property boundary.
How much water does an automatic system save?
Up to 60% compared with watering by hand: each zone gets as much water as it needs, and watering happens early in the morning, when the water doesn’t evaporate.
